On Earth Day 2023, SCB is celebrating the theme “Invest in Our Planet” by showcasing the many ways we help companies on their path to sustainability.

Over the last 17 years, we have facilitated the abatement of over 640 million tonnes of CO2 through transactions in sustainable commodities, renewable energy, principal carbon, and partnerships featuring the ClimatePositive environmental attribution across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. We are committed to being net-zero by 2030, and since 2021, we have been carbon neutral.

In sub-Saharan Africa, SCB is supporting the distribution and use of 50,000 high-efficiency cookstoves in Rwanda and Sierra Leone, with 25,000 in each country. The stoves will benefit 50,000 households, more than 200,000 people, over a minimum ten-year lifecycle and beyond, thanks to the broader social and community impacts provided. The use of these cookstoves dramatically improves the health of rural families solely reliant on firewood to boil water and cook food. We also funded solar power and adult literacy programs at nine buildOn schools in Malawi, benefiting over 6,000 children and 700 adults with increased access to education. Additionally, we invest in environmental and social projects in several Asian countries, financing the provision of clean drinking water filter units in Nepal, reducing illnesses associated with water sanitation and hygiene while also tackling environmental issues such as carbon emissions reductions from burning wood to purify drinking water. Our innovative financing project to fund the planting of four million trees in Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan region of Northeast India, is expected to remove over 360,000 tons of CO² from the atmosphere, improve biodiversity and habitats, and support local jobs and livelihoods. We are also the sole provider of 100,000 clean cookstoves in a humanitarian setting in Bangladesh, benefiting the Rohingya refugee and host community with fuel-saving stoves that improve health. The stainless steel and cast-iron stove has no chimney, making it ideal for the refugee camp setting where homes are made of wood and tarpaulin. We help companies and individuals achieve carbon neutrality through carbon credits to abate their emissions and offer sustainable certifications to individuals and small businesses with the “ClimatePositive” label, with projects worldwide. Our popular support through ClimatePositive has not only compensated for emissions via carbon credits but also resulted in the planting of 4,533 trees in partnership with Eden Reforestation Projects, creating livelihoods among underserved communities. Initial findings of a global study on socioeconomic impact in Kenya show that local tree-planting employees have experienced a 78% increase in income since working with Eden, and 81% of employees have opened bank accounts for the first time.

Moreover, we assist companies in substituting high-carbon commodities for cleaner alternatives, such as increasing ethanol in fuel. Earlier this year, we supported the development of the futures market for Molybdenum Oxide, making the case for a financial derivatives product. Molybdenum is used for stainless steel production and has a role in the development of renewable energy technologies, particularly wind power generation. It is no wonder that we have maintained our position as our clients’ and partners’ top low-carbon company. In the Energy Risk Commodity Awards 2023, SCB was voted #1 in the following categories:

  • Best Overall Energy Broker
  • Best Overall Commodities Broker
